At Perry High School, junior Essie Boschee spends her days in motion, balancing the rhythm of school, the intensity of track, and the spirit of cheer. But her journey as a pole vaulter is anything but ordinary. Without a vault pit in Perry, Essie travels to Guthrie to train, a commitment that speaks to the dedication behind every jump she takes.
That dedication was tested early in her career. As a freshman, she faced a mental barrier at 9 feet, one that felt bigger than any physical height.
“Although I have cleared much more impressive heights, the feeling of getting over the mental block of 9’0 has been more empowering and encouraging than any other bar I have jumped thus far.”
That moment became a turning point, shaping how she approaches both competition and growth. For Essie, the real opponent isn’t across the runway, it’s within.
“I find that when I am only concerned about beating a negative mindset, I am able to exceed my expectations and jump without any pressure from competitors.”
Her mindset is rooted in the influence of her parents, Shea and Scott Boschee, whose work ethic and values have shaped her approach to life. She also credits her chemistry teacher, Ms. Budig, for reinforcing the importance of authenticity and accountability, lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.
Outside of athletics, Essie is deeply involved at Perry, participating in Student Council, Youth and Government, NHS, NAHS, and Junior Leadership, while also serving as her class secretary. Balancing it all requires discipline she’s developed over time.
“It takes time management skills and being able to arrange your priorities.”
Behind the scenes, her support system fuels her success, especially her sister Zoe, who drives her to practice and keeps her grounded during meets.
Representing Perry means more than competing. It’s about honoring a legacy started by Kendalyn Stueve, the school’s first female pole vaulter.
Every run, every vault, every mile to Guthrie, Essie Boschee is building something bigger than results. She’s raising the bar for what’s possible.
