On Friday nights in Yale, the lights don’t just shine on the field; they follow Ben Whitsett wherever he goes. A three-sport senior athlete, Whitsett has built a reputation for doing whatever his team needs, whether that’s taking snaps at running back, delivering a hit at linebacker, or stepping onto the baseball diamond as a pitcher, catcher, or shortstop.
His journey hasn’t been defined by ease, but by how he responds when things get tough. After playing just six games in a football season, Whitsett still earned District MVP, an accomplishment that says as much about his grit as it does his talent.
“Getting district MVP after only playing in six total games is something I’ll never forget.”
Whitsett credits sports with shaping who he is beyond the scoreboard. The lessons go deeper than wins and losses, rooted in perseverance and accountability, qualities he leans on in every aspect of life.
“It has taught me perseverance, resilience, humility, and accountability.”
That mindset didn’t come out of nowhere. Influences like his former teacher, Mrs. Tucker, helped lay the foundation early, pushing him to strive for excellence both in the classroom and beyond.
“She always pushed me to be the greatest I could be, not only in the classroom but in life.”
Faith also plays a central role in Whitsett’s life, guiding how he approaches challenges and success alike.
“I try my best every day to live my life as Jesus did.”
On the field, he’s learned just as much from teammates, especially the importance of staying selfless and focused.
“Always do my job, always be humble, and not be selfish.”
For Whitsett, representing Yale isn’t just about wearing a jersey; it’s about carrying a community with him every time he competes.
“My favorite part is representing my teammates, classmates, and the community of Yale.”
As his high school career winds down, one piece of advice continues to guide him forward.
“Trust God’s plan, even when I don’t understand it.”
