Perry’s Lainey Hughey – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Stillwater Medical Clinic of Perry

On any given day at Perry High School, you’ll find Lainey Hughey moving from one gym or field to the next, rarely slowing down. A sophomore with a relentless drive, Hughey balances softball, basketball, and cheerleading, but it’s her competitive edge that truly sets her apart.

As the starting shortstop for the Perry Lady Maroons and a guard on the basketball team, Hughey thrives in high-pressure moments. Close games don’t intimidate her, they fuel her.

“I always want to be the one to make a difference and change the game,” Hughey said.

That mindset has been years in the making. From early mornings to late practices, her journey hasn’t come without setbacks. But she credits those moments of failure for shaping who she is today, both as an athlete and a person.

Her biggest influences stand close to home.

“My parents push me every day to be a great athlete, but an even better person,” she said.

At school, Coach Hayes has played a major role in her development, teaching lessons that go beyond the diamond.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned is that you have to earn everything, nothing is given to you.”

Hughey’s career already features standout moments, including a diving catch during the 2024 state quarterfinals that left fans stunned. But one victory stands above the rest, a 2-0 win over Heritage Hall in the 2025 Super Regionals that sent Perry back to state after years of falling short.

“That game meant everything. We proved people wrong.”

Off the field, Hughey is just as driven. She’s involved in Student Council and National Honor Society, managing a packed schedule through discipline and careful planning.

“It’s all about prioritizing and knowing when to say no.”

Through it all, Hughey never forgets who she represents. Whether she’s stepping onto the softball field or the basketball court, she carries more than just her own expectations.

“It means I’m representing my school and community with pride. I want to show what we’re all about.”

And for Lainey Hughey, that means heart, grit, and a constant pursuit of something greater.
