Ponca City’s Luke Blum – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Phillips 66

Luke Blum doesn’t rely on luck when he steps onto the tennis court, he relies on discipline, preparation, and a deep drive to win. A senior at Ponca City High School, Blum has spent countless hours sharpening his game, building himself into a competitor who refuses to back down.

“What motivates me is the fear of losing. I like to win, and my doubles teammates push me to do better.”

That mindset has shaped Blum into a relentless athlete. Tennis, often seen as an individual sport, becomes something more when he plays doubles. The connection with his partner fuels his performance, pushing him to match intensity with consistency. Off the court, his dedication is just as strong. He credits his success to self-discipline and long hours practicing outside of school.

Blum also draws inspiration from the best in the world.

“Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are both showing extreme speed, determination to win, and discipline.”

Their influence shows in his playing style, fast, focused, and resilient under pressure. But his growth hasn’t just come from athletics. In the classroom, government teacher Anthony McCrary has helped him find his voice.

“My government teacher, Anthony McCrary, encourages my involvement, and I have found myself participating in class conversations in his class more than I have in any other class.”

One moment stands above the rest in Blum’s high school career. Early in the season, he and his doubles partner secured a statement win against a team that had previously won the 5A state championship twice.

“When my partner and I won our first match of the first tournament of the year against a team that had previously won 5A state twice, it showed us that this year will be our year to fully compete and win.”

Now, Blum carries not just personal ambition, but the pride of Ponca City with him every time he competes.

“It means a lot. Ponca City has been a team that people see and immediately think they will win, but not this year. It feels good to win and be the team that will win for Ponca City.”

With determination as his foundation, Luke Blum is ready to finish his senior season strong.
