Tonkawa High School’s Jazz Burris – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Stillwater Medical Clinic of Tonkawa

Jazz Burris doesn’t limit herself to one lane. At Tonkawa High School, the sophomore competes across softball, basketball, and track, building a reputation not just for versatility, but for steady, everyday growth. For Jazz, progress isn’t always loud, it’s measured in small improvements that stack up over time.

“Honestly, getting better every day. I love seeing progress, even the small stuff.”

That mindset carries her through long practices, tough losses, and the constant demands of being a multi-sport athlete. She knows consistency is what separates potential from performance, and she leans into that daily commitment.

Her foundation starts at home. Jazz credits her parents, especially her dad, for shaping her approach to both sports and life, pushing her to grow into the best version of herself. That guidance has carried into her athletic journey, where mentorship has also played a key role.

“Coach Dustin Potts is always one call away when I need help. That kind of impact goes way beyond sports.”

That sense of support fuels her discipline. Jazz understands that success isn’t just about showing up when it’s easy, it’s about staying locked in when distractions creep in and motivation dips. Balancing three sports with academics takes careful time management, but she’s learned when to push and when to reset.

One of the most defining moments of her career didn’t come with a win, but with perspective. A narrow loss to Oktaha, who went on to win state, left a lasting impression and sharpened her competitive edge heading into the future.

Rivalries add another layer of intensity, especially against Blackwell, where every matchup feels personal. In practice, she sharpens her skills against teammates like Cabrey Boland, whose competitive nature keeps the standard high.

“Every team needs a player like Cabrey.”

Jazz is also quick to recognize the players who don’t always get the spotlight, pointing to Jayla Paul as someone who consistently delivers when it matters most.

Beyond athletics, she stays involved in National Honor Society and FCA, maintaining balance through organization and perspective.

“It means a lot. I want to make Tonkawa proud.”

For Jazz, the goal reaches beyond wins and stats. She’s focused on who she’s becoming, knowing the impact she leaves as a person will outlast any final score.
