At just a sophomore, Ben Winburn has already made his presence known at Newkirk High School, competing in football, basketball, and track. Balancing three sports and academics isn’t easy, but Winburn thrives on the challenge, driven by a deep connection to his family, his coaches, and his hometown.
“What motivates me is just being on the field, being able to play for my family and my town,” Ben said. That pride shows every time he suits up. Representing Newkirk isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about making those around him proud.
Ben credits his grandpa, Dwight Winburn, along with his parents and coaches, as his biggest role models. “They have helped shape me into who I am today. They’ve always been there for me, teaching me new things and showing me how to do stuff right,” he explained.
Athletic success hasn’t come by chance. Winburn is quick to point out that it’s been built through hard work, conditioning, and putting in the time. That dedication paid off early when he earned varsity playing time as a freshman, a moment he considers a defining highlight in his young career.
When it comes to competition, there’s one matchup that always gets his adrenaline pumping: Tonkawa, Newkirk’s longtime rival. “They’re the team we always want to beat, no matter the sport,” Ben said.
Teammates play a big role in his development as well. He points to fellow sophomore Garner Wood as someone who pushes him daily: “We play all the same sports, except track, and he helps me continue to get better.”
Balancing athletics with schoolwork requires focus and sacrifice. “Sometimes you just have to stay up late studying for tests after practice,” Ben admitted. “It’s all about putting in the time.”
For Winburn, wearing the Newkirk uniform means more than competing, it’s about carrying on a legacy. His grandfather, Dwight, was a state champion in football at Marshall High School in 1964 and later a runner-up in 1965. With over 30 years of coaching experience and now serving as Newkirk’s Athletic Director, Dwight’s influence runs deep.
“It means a lot,” Ben said. “I just want to make everyone proud.”
