Davenport High School senior Landry Miller has grown up on a softball field, and she would not have it any other way. From T-ball to her final seasons in a Lady Bulldogs uniform, the veteran utility player has come to embody the program’s blue-collar identity of toughness, pride and consistency.
Miller, who has played every position in both fastpitch and slow pitch, has settled in at third base in recent years, embracing the challenge of holding down the “hot corner.” “Playing 3rd you always have to be ready and think quickly on situations,” Miller said. “It’s a hot corner.” That readiness shows in the way she approaches every pitch, whether she is defending the line or stepping into the batter’s box with runners on base.
At the plate, Miller prides herself on being a smart situational hitter. “Going up to the plate I always check where my base runners are to make sure of what I need to do to either produce runs or help move runners into scoring position,” she said. “I always look to Coach Gaylord to make sure I get the sign.” That attention to detail reflects a broader maturity that has been shaped by years of practice, wins and losses.
“Playing softball since T-ball has shaped me who I am today,” Miller said. “I have learned dedication, teamwork, and perseverance through wins and losses… Softball has shown me the value of setting goals and working hard to achieve them.” She credits her father as her biggest inspiration, noting how he works long hours far from home but still finds a way to be in the stands. “He is the most hardworking guy I know and he is my biggest fan,” Miller said. “I am very blessed to have him as my dad.”
Miller also shines in the classroom, where English is her favorite subject and teacher Mrs. Gaylord has been a steady influence the past three years. “Not only is she there for me on the field but she is there for me in the classroom as well,” Miller said. Away from school and softball, she enjoys hanging out with friends and shopping, recharging before the next game.
What she says she loves most, though, is representing Davenport’s “very reputable softball program” alongside teammates who “show up ready to work hard” and bring energy every day.
