Jones’ Aleah Hankins
VYPE: Aleah, what grade are you in and what position do you play?
Aleah Hankins: I’m a shooting guard in basketball.
VYPE: What accomplishment are you most proud of as a student-athlete?
AH: Being named to the All-Tournament Team at the Wheat Capital Tournament this year.
VYPE: What has sports taught you that has made you a better person?
AH: How to fight through adversity in ways that extend far beyond the court. The game constantly challenges you, whether it’s coming back from a tough loss, pushing through physical exhaustion, or staying confident after a mistake. I’ve learned setbacks are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines your growth.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade?
AH: My sixth-grade science teacher, Ashlynn Schuermann. Mrs. Schuermann helped me how to grow in ways that went far beyond the classroom. She believed in me when I didn’t always believe in myself and pushed me to see my own potential. Because of her, I became more confident in who I am and what I’m capable of.
VYPE: What is your favorite part about representing your high school as an athlete?
AH: Knowing that I’m playing for something bigger than myself. Being a part of this program and community is something I am so grateful for.
VYPE: Which professional athlete do you look up to?
AH: Caitlin Clark. I admire her confidence on the court. She plays fearlessly, takes big shots, and trusts herself even in high-pressure situations.
VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?
AH: “Nothing happens overnight,” something my coach, Coach Mathews, told me. It reminds me that progress takes time and effort, and that staying consistent and working hard is what leads to real results, even if you don’t see them right away.
VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout to anyone you wish.
AH: I would like to thank my mom for never missing a game, I can’t remember a time I looked in the stands and she wasn’t there. She truly shows what it means to show up and support someone fully. I also want to thank my dad for always pushing me to be the best basketball player I can be, and my siblings for keeping me humble while encouraging me to reach my full potential. Finally, I’d like to thank Coach Mathews for believing in me when no one else did and for never giving up on me, no matter what. Their support has shaped me into who I am both on and off the court.
