Perry High School’s Sayben Owen – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Seth Wadley of Perry

For Perry High School junior Sayben Owen, being a multi-sport athlete isn’t just about competition, it’s about purpose, discipline, and gratitude.

Owen competes year-round in softball, wrestling, and golf, balancing the demands of each sport while maintaining her identity both on and off the field. As the Lady Maroon’s second baseman and a 125-pound wrestler, she has developed a reputation for toughness and consistency, traits shaped by her faith and family.

“I am motivated each day by knowing that God has gifted me with the talents and a healthy body to compete.”

That perspective fuels Owen through long practices and challenging seasons. Whether it’s the grind of wrestling or the mental focus required in golf, she embraces the daily commitment it takes to succeed.

“It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to each sport. When something becomes a daily commitment, it can be difficult to maintain enjoyment, but embracing those challenges is what pushes you closer to achieving your goals.”

Her work ethic is rooted in the example set by those closest to her.

“My brothers displayed true discipline and hard work, and now I get to chase the same goals. My dad has always been a Godly example that pushes me to work harder, and my mom has shown me that my worth goes far beyond being an athlete.”

Owen’s high school career already includes standout moments, including a state softball championship as a freshman and a signature wrestling victory this season over a returning state champion.

She also thrives on competition, particularly against familiar opponents like Lara Mullin, and in practice with her cousin and teammate, Alexi Valencia, who helps push her to improve daily.

Off the field, Owen is active in FCA and the National Honor Society, while maintaining strong academic performance, a balance she says requires responsibility and focus.

“It requires a lot of responsibility, balancing different things at once in order to maintain good grades while focusing on your sports performance.”

Through it all, representing Perry remains one of her greatest honors.

“It means a lot to me, and reminds me to remain humble and grateful for every opportunity that I’ve been given.”
