Ponca City’s Chance Hafen – Baseball Spotlight – Presented by Thomas Henley, Shelter Insurance

Ponca City senior catcher Chance Hafen has built his baseball career through perseverance, patience, and a passion for the game. His love for baseball began early, but it’s his dedication and belief in the process that have shaped who he is today, both as a player and a leader within the Wildcats program.

“I am fortunate enough to play the sport I love every day,” Hafen said.

That gratitude drives his approach to each practice and game. Hafen understands that success in athletics doesn’t happen overnight, and his own journey proves it. He remembers the struggles of his early high school years and the growth that came from staying committed.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work and trusting the process,” he said. “I went from not having a hit my entire freshman season to getting opportunities to play at the college level. It’s taken a lot of time finding ways to get extra work in.”

Hafen credits his father as a major influence, not only for teaching him about baseball but also for setting an example of discipline and family values.

“I’d say my dad is my biggest role model. He is the hardest-working guy I know, always puts his family first, and has helped me so much with baseball.”

One of Hafen’s favorite memories came during summer ball, when he and several teammates captured a tournament title at the University of Oklahoma’s field, an experience he calls “pretty special” because of the people he shared it with.

When it comes to practice, Hafen enjoys any chance to compete and learn, especially from other talented catchers. He points to former players and current teammates like Hunter Cales, who embody the work ethic he respects most.

“Hunter Cales is a guy I’ve seen fully bought into the program. He takes whatever role he has that day and always gives his best effort to help the team win.”

Balancing school, sports, and personal goals requires focus, something Hafen takes seriously.

“It’s super important to put schoolwork first,” he said. “It may mean sacrificing free time to stay on top of your grades.”

For Hafen, representing Ponca City means more than wins, it’s about legacy.

“It means a lot to me to help turn our program and school into one with a winning mentality, a team that goes out and plays hard every day.”
