Newkirk High School senior Jordyn Carleton has spent much of her high school career balancing a busy schedule filled with softball, basketball, and track. Whether she’s patrolling the outfield, running the court, or hitting the track, her motivation stays rooted in the people who inspire her the most.
“My family and everyone who looks up to me are my biggest motivators,” Carleton said.
The support system around Carleton has been key throughout her journey. She credits her parents for showing her how to approach life with persistence and positivity.
“My biggest role models are my parents because they work so hard and have shown me how to be positive through every situation no matter what,” she said. “They’ve supported me through every aspect of my life whether in sports, school, or anything else I wanted to pursue.”
One mentor who has remained in her life since middle school is Mrs. Ailey, her former eighth grade science and English teacher.
“Mrs. Ailey has stayed someone I can talk to about anything through all these years,” Carleton said.
Carleton believes her athletic success stems from a blend of hard work, support, and the right mindset.
“To be successful in sports, it has taken hard work and dedication of course, but also support from the people I love, great coaches and teammates, and the mindset that this is supposed to be a game that brings joy,” she said.
While she’s experienced plenty of winning moments, it’s the bonds created along the way that stand out most.
“Although there have been many great moments on the field, I will never forget the bus rides with my teammates—those are the highlight of sports to me.”
Carleton mentions that she and her teammates take special pride in competing against Pawhuska and appreciates teammates like Teagan Morton, whose drive pushes everyone to improve. She also credits team manager Jemma for her enthusiasm and behind-the-scenes work.
Outside of athletics, Carleton is active in National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Student Council, all while managing her busy academic schedule.
“Managing my time wisely and asking for help when I need it has kept everything straight,” she said.
Representing her school is a responsibility she values deeply.
“It means a lot to me because I know there are so many kids that look up to my team and can’t wait to grow up so they can do the things we’re doing, and I really cherish that.”
