Perry sophomore Sayben Owen, who wrestles and plays softball and tennis, is part of a legacy that takes pride in representing the Maroons.
“Representing my school and community is a great honor and privilege,” she said. “Growing up in Perry for most of my life, it was amazing getting to watch my brothers win state championships for Perry. I’ve always hoped that I could be a part of something like that and it’s very encouraging.”
Owen further attests to the great community she has around her.
“I am blessed to have so many positive influences in my life,” she said. “I have an amazing family that has pushed me in everything I do. I have great coaches like Coach Bryan Wilson, Coach Bryan Hayes, and my dad, Kevin Owen, that have invested in me.”
Owen is proud of some moments in her freshman year like qualifying for the state wrestling tournament and her final catch during the state softball championship game. She knows that it takes discipline and consistency to achieve success in her sports.
“Whatever amount of work you put in, it will show when you compete,” she said.
Owen loves that she’s had her older brothers and cousins to look up to her whole life. She also loves “competing next to my teammates and using the abilities God has given me to glorify Him.” She values those around her in a way that sets her apart.
“I feel like every member of our team is valuable,” she said. “Last year our team motto was ‘For a Purpose.’ Not every girl on our team had a winning record, but they all contributed to make us all better. I believe that is what it is all about.”
Owen said that she also admires PSU wrestler Aaron Brooks and ISU wrestler David Carr.
“I love that they are bold in their faith,” she said. “Neither are afraid to profess their love for Jesus Christ which is something I look up to.”
Outside of athletics, Owen is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes & National Honor Society, as well as the youth group at First Baptist Church in Perry where her family are members. Owen is a student athlete who has great character on and off the field and VYPE commends her for that!
