Heather Monks has spent more than three decades doing exactly what she always knew she was meant to do, teach. Growing up in a family of educators, the classroom felt like home long before she ever had one of her own. Today, she continues that legacy at Ponca City Senior High School, where she has taught for 26 of her 31 years in education.
Heather teaches Marketing to students in grades 9 through 12, covering subjects like Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Marketing Fundamentals, Employment Essentials, and Customer Service. Her classroom is more than a place to learn business concepts, it’s a place where students feel seen, supported, and encouraged. Much of that comes from the influence of her own high school business teacher, whose kindness and genuine care left a lasting impression. Heather strives to bring that same spirit into her own teaching every day.
For her, the relationships she builds with students are the most rewarding part of the job. Their energy, humor, and individuality keep her young at heart and remind her why she chose this path in the first place. After 31 years, she still looks forward to each day, knowing that even small moments can make a big impact.
Beyond the classroom, Heather’s life is just as full. She and her husband, Alan, also a teacher, have raised six daughters and now enjoy time with their growing family, including their grandchildren. Whether it’s traveling together or simply being present for family moments, those experiences bring her just as much joy as teaching.
Heather also shares advice with future educators: be flexible, kind, helpful, and generous with your time. Those qualities, she believes, are at the heart of truly meaningful teaching.
For Heather Monks, teaching isn’t just a career, it’s a calling. And after all these years, she still can’t imagine doing anything else.
