At Ponca City High School, April Graham is wrapping up a memorable first year in the classroom, one she describes as a whirlwind in the best possible way. Teaching Fundamentals of Technology and Desktop Publishing to students in grades 9 through 12, Graham has quickly found her rhythm, with plans to expand her offerings next year by adding Photography to her course lineup.
Graham’s path to education is rooted in her belief that every individual has untapped potential. Growing up as the fourth of seven siblings and later becoming a mother to two daughters, Amelia (10) and Evie (7), she developed a natural ability to encourage and uplift those around her. That mindset now shapes her teaching philosophy, as she strives to help students see beyond their current abilities and believe in what they can become.
Her own educational journey played a major role in shaping that perspective. Homeschooled until the middle of fourth grade, Graham credits her mother for building a strong academic and personal foundation. The transition into public school could have been daunting, but a supportive teacher helped make it exciting, reinforcing her confidence and opening her eyes to new opportunities. Those early influences continue to inspire the way she connects with her own students today.
In the classroom, Graham finds the most fulfillment in building relationships. She values creating a space where students feel supported, encouraged, and understood. Watching them grow, whether it’s overcoming challenges, gaining confidence, or discovering new strengths, is what makes teaching meaningful to her.
The best advice she’s received, “Build a relationship with your students,” is something she carries with her daily. It’s a simple principle, but one that guides her interactions and helps foster trust in her classroom.
Outside of school, Graham enjoys spending time with her daughters, staying active, and making memories with friends and family. Above all, she hopes her students leave her class with a stronger sense of confidence, knowing they are capable of far more than they may realize.
