The first thing you notice about Normandy Lyautey isn’t just how she plays, it’s how she thinks. As a freshman at Ponca City High School, stepping onto a varsity field filled with older, faster, stronger players could feel overwhelming. For Normandy, it’s fuel.
She anchors the back line as a defender, shifting between center back and outside back with a growing confidence that comes from experience far beyond her years. That experience hasn’t been easy-earned. Moving from Montana to California, and now to Oklahoma, forced her to constantly adjust, to new teams, new expectations, and a faster, more physical style of play. Instead of shrinking from it, she adapted.
“Work hard and have fun.”
That simple phrase, repeated by her mom before every game and practice, has become her compass. It balances the pressure she puts on herself, the fear of letting teammates and coaches down, with the joy that first drew her to the sport.
Normandy’s game is built on effort and awareness. Defense, especially at her position, demands anticipation, communication, and discipline. She studies it, learns it, and lives it. Whether she’s matching up against a quick attacker like her teammate Dani in practice or locking down the sideline during a match, she’s constantly refining her instincts.
Off the field, Normandy is just as dynamic. She plays the cello, creates artwork that has already seen publication, and writes and illustrates her own stories. It’s a different kind of creativity, but one that mirrors her ability to see the field in unique ways.
Her biggest influence remains close to home. Her older brother, a soccer player himself, set the standard, not just for skill, but for character. And long before high school, before club teams and varsity dreams, there was her dad, her first coach, teaching her the game and pushing her to grow.
Making the varsity team as a freshman stands as her proudest moment so far. But for Normandy, it’s not the peak, it’s the starting point. She’s still learning. Still adapting. Still building. And she’s just getting started.
