For Avery Humphrey, an 11th grader at Ponca City High School, running is more than just a sport; it’s a way to grow as both an athlete and a person. Competing in cross country and track, Humphrey finds motivation in a combination of faith, determination, and even a four-legged companion.
“What motivates me is wanting to be a better runner and person, and God,” Humphrey said. “Also, my dog Bowie.”
Her journey as a runner has been shaped heavily by her coach, whom she calls her biggest role model. “She’s so strong and she’s also just an amazing coach,” Humphrey shared. From her, Avery has learned that the formula for success doesn’t have to be complicated. “What it takes to be a successful athlete is practice,” she said.
For Humphrey, the friendships and bonds created through running are as meaningful as the races themselves. “I think the highlight of my career is all the people I’ve met and became friends with,” she said. “Our team is like a little family.”
Practices are a chance not only to improve but also to enjoy the company of teammates. She especially enjoys training with Paetyn Price. “She’s such a bubbly person, and I love being around her. I could go on,” Humphrey said with a smile. When it comes to recognition, Humphrey believes everyone on the team contributes something valuable. “I feel like everyone is very appreciated,” she explained. “Everyone has their own place on the team.”
Outside of sports, Humphrey is just as committed to her school and community. This year, she joined Key Club and the Student Athlete Advisory Council for the first time, adding to her already busy schedule. Balancing it all takes effort, but she’s found her approach. “It takes a lot of energy, both mentally and physically,” she admitted.
When she does have time for herself, Humphrey enjoys following Taylor Swift, whose music has been a steady source of encouragement. “I just love her, and her music has helped me through some tough times,” she said.
As she continues to train and compete, Humphrey represents Ponca City with determination, positivity, and a love for the sport that shines through every step.
