BLACKWELL MAROONS
Coach: MARQUES A ODOM
1-9

OFFENSE
As the Blackwell Maroons gear up for the 2025-2026 season, there’s a noticeable buzz of optimism surrounding the program. With seven returning starters on offense, Head Coach Marques A. Odom is focused on progress and stability, and he has the pieces to turn the corner this fall. At the heart of the offensive attack will be Balen Grell, who steps into the starting quarterback role after serving as a backup last season. Grell will be supported by a well-rounded group of skill players, including standout slot receiver Tanner Ward (So.), dependable wideouts Jude Sappenfield (Jr.) and Dade Lovall (So.), and tight end Owen Ashford, providing a mix of speed, hands, and size for the passing game. The ground game will be led by a tough, physical backfield. Fullback Ryder Short (So.) brings grit and downhill running, while running back Bowdy Thompson (So.) returns from a season-ending injury in 2024 with something to prove. Together, they form a powerful one-two punch that can wear down defenses. Up front, Alonzo Palma (Jr.) anchors the offensive line at center. His leadership and experience will be vital as the line looks to establish dominance in the trenches. With several returning linemen who rotated in last year, cohesion and chemistry will be improved, setting the foundation for a more consistent and physical offensive identity. With youth, returning experience, and a hunger to compete, the Blackwell offense is ready to take a significant step forward in 2025.

DEFENSE
Defensively, the Maroons bring back seven starters and a strong core that will look to set the tone with physical, assignment-sound football. The linebacker group is the heart of the defense and promises to be one of the team’s major strengths. Ryder Short (So.) and Bowdy Thompson (So.) return to form a battle-tested and aggressive linebacker trio. Their ability to swarm to the ball and control the middle of the field will be key to Blackwell’s defensive success. The defensive line is anchored by James Looper (Jr.), Carson Spencer, and Blake Strong, forming a rugged front that will challenge opponents at the point of attack. Their depth and physicality up front will help control the line of scrimmage and free up the linebackers to make plays. In the secondary, Tanner Ward (So.) returns as a key piece at defensive back, bringing speed and vision. Alongside him are two more experienced DBs who will round out a unit capable of limiting big plays and stepping up in coverage. With returning starters at every level of the defense, this group has the potential to be tough, disciplined, and relentless — exactly what Coach Odom is building his program on. Expect a more confident and battle-ready Maroons squad that is determined to earn respect in 2025.
