Cleveland’s Abigail Bevins
Cleveland High School sophomore Abigail Bevins is both a catcher and utility player for the Lady Tigers softball team. She has already proven to be a force on the field after getting honorable mention as a freshman and earning a Rookie of the Year title. A former teammate from last season is someone who Bevins said helped her improve.
“Last year, our varsity senior catcher, Hallie Horine, was my biggest competitor – in a good way,” she said. “I pushed her to get better and she definitely pushed me to be better.”
As a testament to the good community that surrounds the team, Bevins said her favorite teacher in school is also a former teammate’s mother.
“Mrs. Horine’s daughter was the starting catcher last year and I always looked up to her,” she said. “Mrs. Horine always checks on me and always asks if I need a hug or if I need to talk about anything and always listens.”
Even when playing new positions, Bevins enjoys learning to be a more well-rounded player. She loves having a coach and a team that push her to be better.
“As a team we appreciate everybody, everyone has a part, on our team we make it clear that everyone has a role, starting pitcher or benched player, we all have an important role,” she said.
Bevins said that her father is a role model to her.
“He always has a life lesson and he has always supported me and my passions and is always at my games and shows up when I need it,” she said.
Bevins is proud to represent her school and community on the field but when she is off the field, her schedule doesn’t slow down. She is in all honors classes, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, involved with student council, FCCLA, and BPA, and manages football, basketball, and track. After high school she plans to follow her passion of working with children by pursuing a degree in the medical field to be a physician in family medicine or pediatrics.
