Stillwater’s Sarah Sanders – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Simmons Bank

Teaching is an important part of our society because it directly impacts and shapes our next generation of leaders and citizens. But along with teaching them the lessons, it is also important to support them and encourage them. Sarah Sanders is a teacher at Stillwater High School and she says that she enjoys all the different aspects of teaching.

“As an educator I enjoy creating meaningful relationships with students and supporting them in the classroom, at their activities, and celebrating their success as they accomplish their goals,” she said.

Sanders teaches United States History to juniors at Stillwater. She is in her second year at SHS, but her twelfth year overall. She has also taught at West Middle School in Ponca City, Stillwater Middle School, Stillwater Junior High, and Klein Collins High School in Spring, Texas.

As a student, Sarah had teachers that had an impact on her and helped her become who she is.

“My AP English four teacher Laura Lee, my Dual Credit US History teacher Randy Neumeyer, my high school cross country and track coach Mike Del Donno, and my high school basketball and track coach Vicki Bevan all contributed to my interest in teaching and coaching,” she said. “I was fortunate to be taught and coached by these individuals who greatly  invested their time and patience into their students and athletes. They all, in their own ways, supported their students and pushed us to be better individuals.”

Over the years, Sanders has been given a number of different pieces of advice that have helped her along the way.

“The best teaching advice I’ve been given is to always keep Tylenol in your desk drawer,” she said jokingly. “No, all kidding aside, I was always told as a young teacher to have a back up plan and be ready to adapt on the fly as needed. Pivoting definitely gets easier with experience and time spent in the classroom.”
