High School freshman Prentiss Martin is already finding her footing at the varsity level, bringing energy, curiosity and a team-first mindset to the court as she begins her high school career.
Martin, an incoming freshman, said the transition to varsity volleyball has been both exciting and welcoming. “So far, it’s been how everyone is nice and plays like a family,” she said. “I’ve had limited time with the upperclassmen since it’s my freshman season, but I’m excited to play together and learn from them, especially leaders like Jess.”
Her passion for the sport is rooted in both personal experience and inspiration from others.
Martin points to Ava Martin, a Creighton alum and current professional volleyball player, as a major influence. “I got to meet and have lunch with her through a family friend last summer and hear about her volleyball journey and where it has taken her,” she said. “It was inspiring to hear all of this from her first-hand.”
On the court, Martin appreciates teammates who lead in different ways. She credits Kendall Gillum as the team’s top setter and admires her effort. “She’s a setter but is not afraid to dive to get the ball up,” Martin said. “We’ve played together a few seasons now.” She also noted Nyla as the most vocal teammate, while Kael and Sadie help keep the mood light.
Martin prefers an aggressive style of play, especially when serving. “Jump serve for sure because I get more power and can angle down on the ball,” she said.
Off the court, she enjoys spending time with friends, continuing to practice and playing beach volleyball. In the classroom, science is her favorite subject, though she named Mrs. Hammack as her favorite teacher.
Martin said athletics have already taught her valuable life lessons. “Definitely team-building skills, working together, overcoming struggles and expecting the unexpected,” she said. “You never know if a teammate gets hurt or is sick and what is needed of you.”
One of the more challenging environments she has faced is Jenks, which she described as “a big gym” with a loud atmosphere.
Despite being new to the program, Martin said she feels supported by both her teammates and coaching staff. “Everyone has been nice and welcoming so far,” she said. “Coach Brown has also done a good job welcoming the new players in.”
As she continues her freshman season, Martin’s focus remains on growth, teamwork and embracing every opportunity to improve alongside her teammates.
