Stillwater’s Maggie Norwood – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Oklahoma Community Credit Union

Maggie Norwood is a senior at Stillwater High School. She participates in tennis, Student Council, Beta Club, and Nation Honor Society. Maggie tried many sports, but tennis stood out to her because of the extra time she gets on the court and has continued playing tennis for eight years now. Her favorite part about tennis is the complexity. She says that it takes technique, skill, athleticism, strategy and mentality to play, and that’s what makes it challenging and fun for her.

Maggie’s favorite sports moment was when she was playing a tournament and losing by five points in a match tiebreaker, but turned things around when her team showed up to support her and ended up winning the match. “Seeing their effort to support me had a significant effect on my mentality. It shows the impact of your team and how important supporting each other is,” she says.

Maggie’s biggest positive impact is her best friend because she is her biggest supporter. Her biggest role models have been her friends, her team, and her coach because she’s able to learn from all of them in the different aspects of her life.

In her free time, Maggie likes to play sports, spend time with her friends, cook, and travel. Her favorite subject in school is science, because it explains how the world works and is very interesting to her. Maggie’s favorite teacher is Mr. Thomas, because he’s really good at explaining difficult concepts while still allowing students to figure things out. After high school, she plans to attend the University of Vermont, while studying biochemistry.

When things get tough for Maggie, she thinks about her future, because she knows that all of her hard work will pay off. Sports have taught her how to persevere and push through tough times. She says that to be a great athlete, “you need to have the determination and will to improve, the perseverance to get through tough matches, and a healthy mindset.” Her advice to other athletes is to always give all of the effort that you can.
