Stillwater High School senior Kyle Stokes has learned that success in athletics is built on discipline, resilience and the people who push you to improve.
A varsity football player, Stokes said his biggest source of motivation comes from those closest to him.
“My friends inspire me the most because they all strive to be better and encourage me to be my very best and get out of my comfort zone,” he said. “They give me motivation to do more and to be better.”
Stokes, who plays Will linebacker, said the physical and mental demands of the sport continue to challenge him, particularly when it comes to conditioning.
“The hardest part for me is track and fit,” he said, referring to the rigorous conditioning work required to stay game-ready.
Despite the challenges, Stokes said the relationships built through football are what he values most.
“I love the brotherhood players share and how everyone motivates each other to be better,” he said.
That sense of connection has helped shape his approach both on and off the field. Stokes said athletics have taught him the importance of consistent effort.
“It takes a lot to be really good at something,” he said. “Athletics have taught me hard work.”
One of his most memorable moments came during his sophomore year, when he broke free for a long touchdown run.
“My favorite memory is scoring a 65-yard run against Muskogee,” he said.
His journey has not been without setbacks. Stokes suffered a broken ankle in seventh grade while at Deer Creek, an injury that tested his determination early on.
Off the field, Stokes enjoys spending time with friends, running and occasionally reading. In the classroom, he gravitates toward English and science, and he credits a former teacher for making a lasting impact.
“My favorite teacher was my seventh-grade math teacher, Mrs. Dollar,” he said.
On game days, Stokes relies on a consistent routine to stay focused.
“Pregame I like to stay to myself, listen to music and really stretch good,” he said.
As he enters his senior season, Stokes continues to lean on the lessons he has learned from perseverance to teamwork as he prepares for the next chapter.
