Jaelynn Wilhelm enters her senior year at Stillwater High School with a clear sense of purpose, shaped by family, teammates and years of growth on and off the field.
Wilhelm, a varsity softball player, said her biggest inspiration comes from her mother, whose resilience has left a lasting impression.
“My mom, because I’ve watched her overcome so many things throughout my life,” Wilhelm said. “She inspires me to keep going and find a way.”
As a center fielder, Wilhelm takes pride in her defensive range, covering ground and reading the game as it unfolds. Her approach at the plate reflects her versatility, adjusting her strategy depending on the situation.
“My thought process changes game to game and sometimes even by the at-bat,” she said.
“Because I can bunt, slap and hit, what I decide to do depends on how the defense is set up.”
Beyond the physical aspects of softball, Wilhelm values the mental discipline the sport demands. She follows one long-standing superstition: avoiding any mention of a no-hitter or perfect game in progress.
“Every time someone says anything about it, it ends immediately,” she said.
Wilhelm describes the team environment as one of the most meaningful parts of her experience.
“Just feeling like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself and you’re not in anything alone — someone always has your back and you do the same for them,” she said.
That sense of connection extends off the field, where Wilhelm enjoys spending time with friends and family. She credits her teammates for creating a positive and supportive atmosphere.
“I love how everyone loves each other and how we have truly become a family rather than just friends,” she said.
Wilhelm also points to the lessons softball has taught her, including leadership and resilience.
“How to work with others and handle both failure and success,” she said.
In the classroom, Wilhelm favors English but said her junior-year math teacher, Mr. Porter, had a lasting impact.
“He actually made me enjoy my least favorite subject,” she said.
As she prepares for her final season, Wilhelm carries forward not only her athletic skills but also the relationships and lessons that have defined her high school career.
