Stillwater’s Aprill Raines – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Simmons Bank

When Aprill Raines stepped into her first classroom, she thought it would be temporary, a stepping stone while her husband finished school. But that first year sparked a passion that has now blossomed into a decades-long teaching career rooted in music, mentorship, and joy.

Now in her third year at Stillwater High School, Aprill serves as Director of Vocal Music, teaching Music Appreciation and directing the SHS Concert Choir. She also co-teaches choir at Stillwater Junior High and plays a pivotal role as music director for the school’s annual musical theatre production. Before joining Stillwater, Aprill’s career included stops at Rock Creek ISD, Durant Middle School, and Durant High School, with time spent earning her master’s degree in Voice Pedagogy at Texas Woman’s University.

Aprill is married to her college sweetheart, Will, and they’ve shared nearly 26 years of marriage. Together they’ve raised three children: Blythe (23), Lydia (20), and Sophie (15). Outside of the classroom, Aprill is a passionate sports fan who rarely misses an Oklahoma State wrestling match and loves cheering on Pioneer athletics.

Aprill finds deep joy in helping students uncover their potential. “It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them accomplish goals, especially when they surprise themselves,” she says. The choir room becomes a place of belonging, where students from all backgrounds find common ground through music. “That shared passion builds a joyful, encouraging community.”

The influence of her own teachers, especially high school choir director Carolyn Wilkins, inspires the program she leads today. “I’ve modeled every choir I’ve led on what I experienced with her,” Aprill says. “She sees the potential in every singer and inspires them to greatness.”

The best advice she ever received? “Less talking, more singing!”, a humorous but wise reminder from a former mentor that she now shares with young music educators.

Grateful to be part of the Stillwater Pioneer family, Aprill says, “This is a place where teachers are celebrated and supported. I’m lucky to work with such a passionate, creative team.” Through music and mentorship, Aprill Raines continues to strike all the right notes in the lives of her students.
