The high school years of a student’s life can be busy and sometimes stressful. Along with the classwork that is assigned, they also can have various extracurricular activities that they are a part of that will take up some of their time. Alex Kearns-Shook is a student at Stillwater High School and he says that, while he might miss out on somethings, he enjoys the things he is a part of.
“There are some activities I haven’t been able to participate in due to my commitment to school, academic team, and band,” he said. “Not very many, however, and those that I do miss I don’t lose much sleep over.”
Alex is a junior at Stillwater. Throughout his life he has had people that have helped him become the person that he is today and will be in the future.
“My parents are a huge influence in my life,” Alex said. “They do so much for me and my sister, and I really appreciate them for that. Also, my favorite teacher would be Mr. Nance. He’s really helped me improve at quiz bowl, and I love his Zoology class.”
As a member of the Academic Team, Alex and his teammates work hard to better themselves and each other so that they are at their best when the competitions come around.
“One teammate I enjoy going against in practice is Alex Kidangathazhe,” he said. “We are both juniors and we both typically score similar numbers. I think everyone on our team is appreciated, but Daniel Naveda has come up incredibly clutch in a lot of games and filled out some of the holes we lost from last year’s seniors really well. Him doing that in his first year on the team is very impressive.”
Whether it is for the Academic Team or the band, Alex says that when he is competing for his school, it is something that he is proud to do.
“There’s an added sense of pride when I perform well while representing my school and community,” he said.
When he is not working on school assignments or preparing for academic team or band competitions, Alex enjoys following Tom Grossi on YouTube.
“I really like him,” he said. “He makes sports news skits and has raised over two million dollars for various charities recently.”
