Stillwater Academic Athlete Cord Nelson – Presented by BancFirst

Cord Nelson has been playing football since he was six years old. After watching his dad and brothers play, he was ready to take his steps onto the field. It’s no surprise that he followed in his father’s footsteps, because he says his dad is his biggest role model due to his vast experience and knowledge. Cord also says that his Heavenly Father has made the greatest impact on his life, giving us a quote from the Holy Bible. 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Cord is going to be a senior this year at Stillwater High School. His favorite subject is history, and his favorite teacher is Larry Hesler, his math teacher. He says that Mr. Hesler is his favorite teacher because “he easily explained difficult math while also teaching valuable lessons that were applicable to work and life in general.” Cord likes to read and work out in his free time; staying in top shape to be the best player that he can be for his team. His plan after high school is to go to college, most likely in Oklahoma. What he’s thinking about studying might be either math or history, but he’s still deciding.

For fun, like any high school student, Cord likes to hang out with his friends. His advice to his fellow athletes is “never give up on something that you enjoy, even when it seems useless.” The height of his career so far has been the pleasure of getting to play varsity for the Stillwater Pioneers. His favorite sports moment was when his team won against Choctaw in the 2023 semifinals, paving the way for his team to advance to the championship for the second year in a row.

“My favorite part about football is getting to be a part of something bigger than me and winning,” Cord explains. What keeps him going in difficult times? Cord says that it’s his team; especially two specific teammates, Enrique Sanchez and Ben Varnum, who have played together with him throughout his entire football career. Cord says that sports have taught him many life lessons. The most memorable lessons for him being that nothing comes easily, be consistent, and don’t discount the value of hard work.
