Lainey Hughey is a proud student athlete at Perry High School. She loves to compete in her sports, but she is just as happy to be able to represent her school and community.
“I feel honored to play with the pride of my school on the front of my jersey,” she said. “The thought of carrying on the legacy of past teams really inspires me to work hard every day, so that someday future teams can do the same for my generation. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to make a name for myself and continue the legacy of past PHS athletes.”
Hughey, a sophomore, plays softball and basketball for the Maroons. She also plays travel ball outside of school. Other than sports, she is also involved in the Student Council, the National Honor Society, and serves as the Sophomore Class Treasurer.
Throughout her life, there have been many people who have played a role in her development as an athlete, student, and person.
“My biggest role models are my parents, Kyle and Kali Hughey,” Lainey stated. “They push me every day to be the best athlete and person that I can be. They’ve always told me that if I want something, it won’t just be handed to me, and I have to work for it. They have taught me to never give up on the things that I love and to persevere through the tough times. A teacher who has had the biggest impact on my life would have to be my ninth-grade Algebra 1 teacher, Timory Kennedy. I loved having her as my teacher because she was always very positive, understanding, and made school enjoyable.”
With a couple of years still to play in high school, Hughey already has her sights set on her next goal, and she is already working to reach it.
“I am motivated by the aspirations of one day playing collegiate softball,” she said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, and I want to inspire young athletes that you can do whatever your heart desires as long as you put in the work to achieve it.”
