The Perry High School Academic Team has had an exceptional season, combining talent, teamwork, and leadership to become a model of both competitiveness and camaraderie. Under the guidance of Head Coach Jaymi Thompson, the Maroons have shown that success comes not just from knowledge, but from working together and supporting one another.
Leading the way are seniors Aiden Thompson and Eli Patak, whose influence reaches far beyond their impressive knowledge. Aiden, a veteran of the academic team since fifth grade, has transformed from a hesitant buzzer to a confident, quick-thinking leader. Balancing AP classes, band, baseball, and other activities, he also takes time to mentor younger students, leaving a lasting positive impact on the team. Eli, recently honored as an Eagle Scout and serving as Drum Major for the Perry High School Marching Band, embodies leadership and dedication. His example has taught the team the importance of cooperation, positivity, and effort in every pursuit.
Juniors Erica Lang-Seabourn and Leighanna Vance round out the starting lineup. Leighanna’s energy and positivity help the team stay confident, even when challenges arise. Her curiosity and balanced approach to academics, band, and other responsibilities make her a reliable teammate. Erica, though quieter, brings a sharp intellect and impressive breadth of knowledge in mythology, literature, art, and pop culture, quickly establishing herself as a vital contributor to the team’s success.
Sophomore Jordan Hedrick has emerged as the team’s math specialist, often solving problems in his head before anyone else has begun to write them down. His unexpected humor and easygoing personality add a layer of fun to the team while showcasing his exceptional abilities.
Coach Thompson praises the group not only for their knowledge but for their teamwork. “This team understands each other’s strengths and makes decisions for the good of the team, not just individually,” she says. Many of the players have grown up in the program, allowing the team to develop trust and cohesion that shows in every match.
With their senior leaders setting the tone, underclassmen stepping up in key roles, and a shared commitment to excellence, the Perry High School Academic Team has built a season to be proud of, creating memories and laying a foundation for continued success in the years to come.
