When an athlete steps out on the field or court to compete, they are playing for more than just themselves. They are also representing the school and community that is on their uniform. And for Nate Rains, it is even more special because of the time he has spent in the town.
“It means a lot to me because I have lived in Perkins my whole life,” he said. “I want to give a good performance so the community can come together. Also, I am thankful for the opportunity that God has given me to play the sports that I love.”
Nate is a junior at Perkins-Tryon High School, where he plays basketball and baseball. Outside of sports, he is also involved in Young Life.
Throughout his career, Rains has invested a lot of time and effort into getting better. He also knows that there are those that have helped him become the athlete he is today.

“It takes a lot of hard work to be successful,” he said. “Also having coaches that want me to have a good future.”
There are people that have had an impact on Nate’s life and he looks up to them as role models.
“One role model for me would be Kobe Bryant,” Rains stated. “He was a hard worker and the mamba mentality motivates me. Also, coach Factor because he really pushes me to succeed in his class.”
Nate has made a lot of memories throughout his career, but he has a couple that stand out as his favorite.
“The highlight for me so far would have to be when we beat Cushing at home,” he recalled. “Actaully, I love anytime we beat Cushing because they are our rivals.”
The teammates that he competes alongside in both sports are great guys, and Nate is thankful for the way that they help each other continually get better.
“I think the teammate I like practicing against would be Jace Myers,” he said. “He pushes me to my limits in practice.”
