When athletes step out onto the field or court to compete in their sport, they are doing more than just playing a game. They are also a representation of the school whose name is on their uniform. Perkins-Tryon’s Jordan Cox is proud to be able to wear her school colors whenever she plays.
“To be able to represent my schools means so much to me because it seems to me like I made it and I’ve done something right or for the good that I get to represent,” she said.
Cox is in her junior year at Perkins-Tryon High School. She plays softball for the Demons and she is also a member of a travel softball team.
Throughout her life, there have been a number of people that have had a positive influence on Cox’s life. But she has a couple of people that have played a big part in who she is today.
“My dad has made a huge impact on my life,” she said. “He is constantly pushing me to be the best I can and is always there for me when I need someone to talk to. One teacher that has been very influential in my life would be Ms. Shaunna Smith. I chose her because she makes every home game she possibly can, and continued to believe in me when no one else did.”
Emmie Smith is the head softball coach at Perkins-Tryon and she says that Cox is an outstanding athlete and teammate.
“Jordan is the true definition of a utility player for us,” Smith said. “Last year she played outfield and caught for us. This year she will lead us from behind the plate. She is a kid that commands excellence from herself and those around her. With her presence behind the plate, the leadership on the field will be great.”
As a student athlete, Jordan has to do more than just prepare and compete in softball. She also has to keep her grades in good standing so she is eligible to play.
“For me to balance my school work and to still be able to do all the activities on long bus rides I’ll try and get some homework done or if I am not able to do that I am usually able to get it done in class.”
