Perkins-Tryon’s Nate Rains – Presented by Payne County Stockyards

Senior Nate Rains has grown up competing, and that edge shows every time he puts on a Perkins-Tryon uniform. A multi-sport athlete for the Demons, Rains balances basketball and baseball while carrying a mindset shaped by family, hard work, and a genuine love for the game.

Rains is the youngest of three siblings, and growing up alongside an older brother and sister who were both athletes helped forge his competitive drive. They never went easy on him, and that constant challenge pushed him to get better. His brother is a familiar face in the stands, making it to as many games as possible, while his sister, now in medical school, still finds time to call and offer advice. That family support remains his biggest motivation.

On the basketball court, Rains plays shooting guard and prides himself on toughness and effort. He draws inspiration from old-school greats like Dennis Rodman and Larry Bird, admiring Rodman’s relentless motor and Bird’s mental toughness. Those traits show up in the little things, blocked shots, timely three-pointers, and doing whatever it takes to help his team win. While individual moments stand out, Rains says his favorite highlights come from team success, especially last season when Perkins-Tryon exceeded expectations and put together a strong year.

Baseball provides another outlet for Rains’ competitive nature. As a pitcher, third baseman, and outfielder, he embraces versatility. One of his proudest moments came last season when he pitched 10 innings during a playoff run, a testament to his durability and trust from his coaches.

Rains credits his success to his enjoyment of the process. He loves practice, offseason work, summer ball, and even watching games on TV or live. That passion carries into daily competition, especially when practicing against teammates like Tyce Slusser, who pushes him while staying positive. He also appreciates the leadership of Coach Parker, whose energy and accountability set the tone.

Outside of sports, Rains stays involved with Perkins-Tryon Demon News and Young Life, while balancing school, athletics, and time with his grandparents. For Rains, representing Perkins-Tryon means giving maximum effort every time, because his community, family, and teammates deserve nothing less.
