Oilton’s Nate Smith – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Shuterra Sports Field Management

There are people in our lives that have an impact on us and help us become who we are. Some of them may be in our life for just a short amount of time, while others may always be part of our life. Either way, the influence they have can be immeasurable. Nate Smith has a few people that have had an impact on him.

“My biggest role models are my mother and father,” he said. “They always tell me that I can do my best in a race. Another would be coach Richards. He teaches me how to push harder in my races and supports me in my races.”

Nate is a sophomore at Oilton High School, where he is on the track and cross country teams. He runs the 5k in cross country, while on the track team he runs the 3200 meter, 1600 meter, 800 meter, and also the relays. He is also a member of the school’s Fish Club.

It takes a lot of work to become a successful runner, but Smith knows that it is all worth it when you see that work pay off.

“You have to be willing to put in lots and lots of practice,” he said. “My coaches, family, and friends motivate me to keep working towards my goals. I think the highlight of my career would have to be making it to state in cross country this year.”

Another thing that helps him become a better runner is his fellow teammates. Nate says that they do a great job of helping each other.

“I think my favorite teammate to practice with is Palani,” he said. “He pushes me when I need to be pushed and also he gives me some competition.”

When he runs in either cross country or track, Nate knows that he is competing for more than just himself.

“I’m representing God and my family,” he said. “So I want to be the best example for others both on and off the field.”
