KJ Burk, a varsity running back at Morrison High School, balances the demands of athletics, academics and family with a focus on discipline, perseverance and teamwork. For Burk, those values start at home.
“The person who inspires me the most is my mom because she’s the only mother who always supports me and my brother, even when we’re going through the hardest times,” Burk said. “No matter how tough things get, she never gives up on us and always finds a way to keep us going. Her strength and love mean everything to me.”
On the field, Burk embraces the responsibility that comes with carrying the ball. “For a running back, the most difficult thing is definitely the pressure of having the ball and being responsible for the offense’s success,” he said. “It’s a lot of weight to carry, knowing your teammates are counting on you to make the right plays and keep them safe.”
To prepare, Burk relies on a simple pregame routine. “I like to stretch and listen to music to get me mentally prepared before a game,” he said. “Stretching helps me stay loose and ready to move, while the music helps me focus and get in the right mindset. This routine really helps me feel calm and confident when it’s time to play.”
Burk’s favorite memory so far came against a top-tier opponent. “Playing head to head with the state champion team and almost winning was an amazing experience,” he said. “It was intense and exciting to compete against such a strong team, and coming so close to winning made it even more memorable. That game showed how hard we worked and how much we can achieve together as a team.”
Outside of football, Burk enjoys sports and fishing for relaxation. “I like sports because they keep me moving and I get to play with friends,” he said. “Fishing is cool because it’s calm and I get to be outside in nature. Both help me enjoy my free time in different ways.” In the classroom, he favors science. “My favorite subject in school is science because I like getting hands-on and messing with experiments to see how things work,” Burk said. He also credits his coach as a favorite teacher who teaches lessons “both in and out of the class.”
Looking ahead, Burk dreams of visiting Hawaii for its beaches, food and outdoor activities. More immediately, he said athletics has prepared him for life beyond high school. “Athletics has taught me the importance of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork,” Burk said. “These are all skills that are valuable in any aspect of life, whether it’s in my career, relationships or personal goals.”
