Morrison Wildcats – Football Team Preview

MORRISON WILDCATS

Coach: HAYDEN GARRINGER

3-7

OFFENSE

With nine returning starters and one of the largest senior classes Morrison has seen in years, the Wildcats are poised to take a big step forward offensively in 2025. Head Coach Hayden Garringer is confident this group can meet the high standards of Morrison football and believes a strong offseason will translate to results on the field. Sophomore quarterback Colton Mourer returns after being thrust into the starting role as a freshman. He gained valuable experience in 2024 and has shown major growth in the offseason. With more command of the offense and better chemistry with his teammates, Mourer could be one of the biggest breakout players in Class A this fall. The backfield is stacked with dynamic athletes. Kaidon Burk (5-11, 175, Jr.) averaged an explosive 14.3 yards per carry last season, racking up 459 rushing yards and adding 124 yards through the air. His ability to run between the tackles, bounce outside, or catch passes makes him a true dual-threat weapon. He’ll share touches with Tae Warriner (5-11, 170, Sr.), a versatile back who can also line up at wide receiver, giving the offense flexibility and unpredictability. Caden Sheronic (6-3, 190, Sr.) returns as the team’s lead blocker and tone-setter, while James Kirkwood (6-2, 200, Sr.), who had two receiving touchdowns last year, will again contribute at tight end and fullback. Toby Dunham (6-2, 210, Sr.) anchors the offensive line and brings veteran leadership and physicality, having started the last two seasons. At wide receiver, Brendon Swaboda (5-10, Sr.) is the go-to target after posting 350 receiving yards and three touchdowns last season. Swaboda also chips in with rushing duties and serves as the team’s backup quarterback. His football IQ, versatility, and leadership make him an indispensable part of the offense. With experience, depth, and a balanced mix of speed and power, the Wildcats are built to be far more explosive and efficient this season.

DEFENSE

Defensively, Morrison also returns nine starters, giving them one of the most experienced units in the district. Coach Garringer is counting on that experience, paired with the leadership of his senior class, to lead the way. Swaboda will once again play a key role as the team’s top cornerback, often tasked with locking down the opposition’s best receiver. His film study and preparation set the tone for the entire defense. At linebacker, Sheronic and Kai Warriner (6-0, 182, Jr.) form a tough and aggressive duo that excels in run support and pursuit. Their ability to fly to the football and disrupt plays in the backfield will be a strength of this unit. Up front, Dunham and Kirkwood bring power and toughness to the line of scrimmage. Kirkwood, a hybrid defensive end and linebacker, provides pass rush pressure and edge containment, while Dunham controls the interior gaps with physical play and experience. Tae Warriner will start at strong safety, where his athleticism and toughness allow him to play downhill and help in both run and pass coverage. Burk will also return as a starting cornerback, giving Morrison two experienced and athletic defenders in the secondary. With speed, physicality, and veteran leadership at every level, Morrison’s defense should be one of the team’s biggest strengths. If the unit plays to its potential, the Wildcats have a strong chance to flip last year’s close losses into victories—and make a run at the postseason.
