Freshman Ashtin Howard is already making a name for herself at Tonkawa High School as a versatile athlete competing in both basketball and track. On the basketball court, she anchors the team as a center/post, while in track, she competes in the shot put and discus. What drives her isn’t just personal achievement; it’s purpose, personal growth, and the opportunity to compete alongside her teammates every day.
For Ashtin, role models and guidance come from close to home. Her grandpa has been a consistent source of support and advice, often helping her with basketball even when he jokes he doesn’t fully know the game. “He’s always there for me and always has advice for me when I need it,” she says with a smile. In the classroom, Mrs. Heinrich has had a major impact, mentoring Ashtin and teaching her confidence. From taking pictures for students to making herself available for a conversation anytime, Mrs. Heinrich exemplifies the kind of support that helps young athletes thrive.
Success, Ashtin explains, comes from relentless effort. “It’s putting in work even when I’m not feeling my best, giving it all I can, and just practicing,” she says. Her dedication has already paid off, one of her career highlights was being named top performer in AAU basketball. She also enjoys the thrill of beating opponents where her team enters as the underdog, proving that preparation and determination can overcome expectations.
Practice is where Ashtin pushes herself the hardest. She enjoys training against teammate Jayla Paul, who plays the same position and challenges her every day. Ashtin values the teamwork and unity of her squad, noting that every player works together to elevate the team, leaving no one overlooked or underappreciated.
Outside of athletics, she participates in the Technology Student Association and plays with the Enid Lady Elite AAU basketball team. Balancing schoolwork and athletics requires careful prioritization, time management, and minimizing distractions.
For Ashtin, representing Tonkawa High School and her community is a source of pride. “Playing in front of people who have known me my whole life, for coaches who support me fully, is pure satisfaction,” she says. With her determination, talent, and love for the game, Ashtin Howard is a freshman to watch on and off the court.
