There are many things that go into a team being successful. While hard work is important, team chemistry is a vital piece. The Tonkawa girls wrestling team says that his squad does not have a specific leader, but instead, they work together as one.
“I can’t really pick a leader or key player because it was genuinely a group effort,” Pfluger said. “Every girl put in the effort to better themselves, they all cheered crazy for each other, and they all had each other back the entire season. There are only six on the team, so the team was the key player.”
Before the season started, coach Pfluger had his expectations for his team, but he is proud to say that he was a little off on his prediction.
“I expected to bring two, maybe three to the state tournament,” Pfluger recalled. “My expectations were wrong and he blew the roof off it. The season was the most successful in our program’s short history. We qualified five out of our six varsity wrestlers. Freeman and Dollarhide placed at state, with Freeman winning her second state title.”
As the team looks ahead to next season, coach Pfluger has his entire squad back again. And he knows that success is not guaranteed, he thinks his team has a great opportunity ahead of them.
“We will meet the challenge of trying to recreate the success of this year,” the coach said. “We do not graduate any seniors but replicating success in consecutive years is a difficult task. I think the girls are ready to make a bigger statement. The greatest thing about all of this is seeing them grow as individuals. There is no price I can put on it. I watched a small group conquer enormous obstacles and reach goals. I am over the moon proud of them and what they’ve done but the work is not done.”
