Shidler High School’s Wyatt Hampton
Shidler High School senior distance runner Wyatt Hampton has built his reputation on perseverance, faith and a willingness to embrace the grind that comes with racing the longest events on the track. A three-time state qualifier in track who competes in the 3,200, 1,600 and 800, Hampton is chasing a fourth state trip this spring while adding to a cross-country résumé that already includes four state appearances, a state medal and All-Star honors.
Hampton, a 2026 graduate and member of the Shidler Tigers, said he draws inspiration from his dad, who he admires for working through problems while keeping things light and making people laugh. That mix of toughness and positivity shows up in Hampton’s approach to distance running, where he believes success starts with a strong mindset. “To run distance, you have to have a strong mindset and push yourself to a very uncomfortable place,” Hampton said.
He credits Shidler coach and favorite teacher Jessica Asher for helping him navigate a busy life that includes serving as a private first class in the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Asher has worked around his Guard obligations, supported him as both a Christian and a person, and even drove to Arkansas on her own dime to watch him race in the Oklahoma-Arkansas All-Star event before heading right back to Oklahoma for one of her own children’s activities.
Hampton said athletics have taught him to win and lose with integrity, lean on God during tough workouts and races, and understand that “nothing is given.” A painful muscle strain at regionals once cost him a state berth as a sophomore, reinforcing the importance of proper warm-ups, cooldowns and injury prevention.
When he is not racing, Hampton enjoys hanging out with friends, going to church, helping on his family’s ranch and catching movies. This summer he will return to Fort Benning for his second year of National Guard training, then in the fall continue his running career at Seminole State on a cross-country scholarship with plans to pursue a law enforcement career after earning his bachelor’s degree.
