Ponca City High School senior Katie Bohon brings a steady presence to the varsity softball team, combining leadership, resilience and a strong sense of sportsmanship as she closes out her high school career.
Bohon, a 12th-grade outfielder, has developed into a reliable contributor both on and off the field. Known for her calm mindset at the plate and her consistency in the outfield, she credits the sport with shaping her character.
“Softball has taught me commitment and integrity,” Bohon said.
Playing in the outfield comes with its own set of challenges, particularly the unpredictability of each play. Bohon said reading the ball is one of the toughest aspects of her position.
“There’s a different read on every single ball,” she said.
Despite the pressure, Bohon approaches each at-bat with confidence and faith.
“When I am at the plate, I usually just think to myself I’ve done this a million times and to just trust myself with the ability God has given me,” she said.
Bohon points to her coaching staff as a key factor in her growth. She said the team benefits from a positive and encouraging environment, especially under the leadership of coach Freeman.
“He coaches in a way that doesn’t tear others down,” Bohon said. “He shows that all he wants for us is for us to be better, and it really does help overall when you have a coach like that.”
Team chemistry has also played a major role in Bohon’s experience. She said her teammates’ support and humor make the season memorable.
“What I love most about my teammates is how much we all get along and support each other,” she said. “They are all so funny.”
She highlighted Harmony Smith as one of the team’s most vocal leaders, while Racine Thomison helps keep the mood light. Bohon also values the friendship she built with teammate Tara Freeman through softball.
Off the field, Bohon enjoys spending time with friends, going to the lake, shopping and catching up on sleep. In the classroom, Spanish is her favorite subject, and she credits teacher Mrs. Fields for making a lasting impact.
“She checks up on me daily and always brightens my day without fail,” Bohon said.
Bohon draws inspiration from former travel coach April Blair, whose selflessness left a strong impression.
“I aspire to be as selfless and supportive to others as she is,” Bohon said.
As she prepares for graduation, Bohon hopes to leave a legacy rooted in sportsmanship.
“Being classy in any situation is important,” she said.
With her combination of talent, perspective and leadership, Bohon has made her mark on the program and set an example for younger players to follow.
