Ponca City High School junior Jonston Burke has emerged as a key leader on the varsity football team, combining strong academic performance with a disciplined approach to athletics.
Burke, who carries a 3.8 GPA, said his success in the classroom reflects the same work ethic he brings to the field. Math stands out as his favorite subject, and he credits teacher Paula White, who taught his Algebra II and honors trigonometry classes, as a major influence on his academic growth.
“My biggest inspiration would be my parents,” Burke said. “Watching them constantly work hard as I’ve grown up sets a good example on how to be successful at anything in life.”
As a quarterback, Burke embraces one of the most mentally demanding positions in football. He said the challenge lies in reading defenses and making quick decisions under pressure.
“You have to come to the line with a pre-snap plan on what the defense is doing, and you have to confirm that plan and react post-snap,” Burke said.
That preparation extends into his pregame routine, where he focuses on energy and communication.
“I like talking with all the guys in the locker room and making sure everyone is on the right page pre-game,” he said.
Burke said the relationships built within the program are what he values most.
“I enjoy every moment of being a part of my team, especially our bond with all the guys,” Burke said. “Everyone gets along very well, and we all have the same goal in mind, and that is to win.”
That sense of unity was tested during a late-season game against Bartlesville, when a teammate suffered a serious injury on the field. Burke said the moment brought the team closer together and fueled a comeback victory.
“One of our teammates broke his leg in the middle of the game, and it really brought our team together,” he said. “We ended up winning that game 25-24.”
Earlier in the season, Burke helped lead Ponca City to a dominant 65-6 win over Enid, which he described as a defining moment.
“It really got our season started off in the right direction, and it was a great morale boost for the team,” he said.
Off the field, Burke enjoys spending time with friends and golfing, balancing the demands of athletics with time to recharge.
Through years of competition, Burke said athletics have shaped his perspective on life.
“Nothing good in life comes easy, and having great discipline will benefit you in every aspect of life,” he said.
With a strong foundation both academically and athletically, Burke continues to develop as a leader, driven by discipline, teamwork and the example set by those closest to him.
