PONCA CITY WILDCATS
Coach: JACOB BIRNBAUM
2024-25 Record: 4-22
The Ponca City Wildcats enter the 2025-2026 boys basketball season with a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper roster, and a strong commitment to playing fast. After finishing 4–22 a year ago, Head Coach Jacob Birnbaum, now in his third season leading the program, believes the growth, experience, and energy within this group signal a fresh start and a promising opportunity to take meaningful steps forward.
Though still young, the Wildcats return several players who saw significant action last season. Their identity is built around tempo, quickness, and effort, necessary ingredients for a team that is undersized compared to many opponents. Birnbaum and his staff emphasize pushing the pace, creating pressure, and using speed as an advantage on both ends of the floor.
One of the team’s most dynamic pieces is sophomore guard/forward Tay Akers (6-2, So.), who led Ponca City in scoring as a freshman. Akers’ ability to score at all three levels makes him a focal point of the offense. He attacks the rim with strength and confidence, but can also step outside and knock down shots when needed. His continued development is key to the Wildcats’ attack.
Anchoring the team’s leadership is senior forward Evin Costello (6-2, Sr.), an outstanding student-athlete who recently earned his pilot’s license. Costello sets the tone with his maturity, work ethic, and versatility on the court. His leadership is especially important for a group featuring multiple underclassmen in the rotation.
The Wildcats’ backcourt features a trio of competitive, quick guards, including Trent Wilson (5-9, Sr.), Colten Stracener (5-10, Jr.), and Leon Wolf (6-1, Jr.), all of whom bring toughness and experience. Sophomore guards Elijah Buffalohead (5-11, So.) and Peyton Wade (6-1, So.) add depth and energy. Inside, seniors Costello and Donovan Harjo (6-3, Sr.) will handle the physical battles, while Akers provides matchup flexibility.
This year’s version of the Wildcats may be young and undersized, but they play with speed, heart, and hunger. With returning experience, emerging talent, and a clear identity, Ponca City looks ready to compete with far more confidence this season and to prove that their steps forward are real and lasting.
