For nearly four decades, Paula Steele has dedicated her life to shaping students both in and out of the classroom, building a legacy grounded in care, consistency, and a passion for mathematics. Currently teaching at Ponca City High School, Steele leads classes in PreAP Algebra 2, Honors Precalculus, and Honors Trigonometry, working primarily with sophomores and juniors as they navigate some of the most challenging and rewarding stages of their academic journeys.
Steele’s path in education began in 1986 at Hugo High School before continuing through West Junior High and East Junior High, eventually bringing her to Ponca City High School in 1999. Over the past 27 years at POHI, she has become a steady presence and trusted educator, known for both her subject knowledge and her ability to connect with students on a personal level.
Her inspiration to teach traces back to her own high school experience, where a math teacher left a lasting impression. That influence shaped Steele’s approach, emphasizing not only academic success but also genuine care for students’ well-being. She has carried that philosophy into her own classroom, striving to create an environment where students feel supported, valued, and capable.
What continues to motivate Steele after all these years is the opportunity to work with teenagers and witness their growth. She finds particular joy in the “lightbulb moments,” when a concept finally clicks and a student gains confidence in their abilities. Those moments, small as they may seem, represent the heart of her work and the reason she continues to invest so deeply in her students.
Throughout her career, Steele has also carried with her a piece of advice that has guided her interactions: never use a harsh response when a softer one will suffice. That mindset has helped foster a classroom culture built on respect, patience, and understanding.
Outside of school, Steele enjoys spending time with her husband, Don, and staying connected with her family, including her children and grandson. She also finds relaxation in creative hobbies like cross stitching and crocheting, balancing the demands of the classroom with quiet, meaningful moments at home.
Through decades of dedication, Paula Steele has made a lasting impact, not only teaching mathematics but also modeling compassion, patience, and genuine care for every student who walks through her door.
