At Ponca City High School, math teacher Kerri Fischer has become a steady source of encouragement and growth for her students. Entering her fourth year at PoHi, Fischer teaches a range of courses that challenge students to think critically, including Algebra I, Geometry and AP Statistics. PoHi is her first teaching assignment beyond student teaching, and she has embraced the opportunity to help students connect with concepts that can sometimes feel intimidating.
Fischer’s path to the classroom was shaped by a long line of influential educators who modeled what it means to care deeply for students. From her elementary teachers in first, third and fifth grade to her high school math teacher, Mrs. Wannamaker, and her biology teacher, Mr. Wannamaker, Fischer saw firsthand how passion and patience could transform a classroom. College professors such as Mrs. McGee, Dr. Parrot and Dr. K further cemented her desire to teach, showing her the impact of strong mentorship.
Today, Fischer brings that same spirit into her own classroom, focusing on relationships as much as formulas. She loves watching students reach “aha” moments when a difficult topic finally clicks, and she values the chance to grow alongside colleagues and students. One piece of advice has guided her approach: invest fully in students, but also remember to care for yourself and step back when needed. Away from school, Fischer enjoys reading, crafting, cooking, baking and spending time with friends and family, including the many children in her life she proudly calls herself an “honorary auntie” to. Grateful for the honor of being recognized, she describes herself as blessed to be surrounded by “marigolds” who help her grow and is excited to continue learning with peers, administrators, support staff, parents and, most of all, her future Wildcats.
