Ponca City Teacher – Andrea Burris – Presented by FNB Ponca

Andrea Burris teaches Extended Transition at Ponca City High School. As she has made her journey as an educator, she has found that she loves to teach and make an impact on her students.
“I started as a paraprofessional somewhat by chance,” she said. “I applied for the job without fully knowing what to expect, but once I began, I quickly realized how much I loved it, especially working with the students. I had the opportunity to learn from two incredible teachers who made a lasting impression on me. They showed me that a special education classroom is about so much more than academics. Their dedication and compassion truly inspired me and helped shape the path I’m on today.”

She is in her tenth year with the Ponca City School District. Her first eight years were as a paraprofessional, and then she transitioned into a teaching role two years ago.

As a teacher, Andrea loves to see her students succeed and reach their goals.

“I truly love celebrating each student’s personal growth,” Burris said. “Whether the progress is big or small, every milestone matters and deserves to be recognized.”

Throughout her teaching career, Andrea has received several pieces of advice to help her in her classroom.

“I feel like the best advice I have received as a new teacher is to be patient with myself,” she said. “Teaching can be tough, especially when you’re still getting the hang of things, but it’s important to remember that it’s okay not to have everything figured out right away. It’s easy to get frustrated, but the key is to give yourself some grace.”

When she is not in the classroom teaching, Burris enjoys spending time with her family.

“I am the proud mom to three amazing kids,” she said. “I have two sons and one daughter: Anthony, Shayla, and Xavier. Our family also wouldn’t be complete without our three dogs, Aurora, Chunky, and Bird, who keep things lively. I love spending time with my family, and one of our favorite things to do together is watch football. We’re avid OU fans, and whether we’re cheering from the stands or gathered around the television at home, you’ll always find us rooting for the Sooners.”
