Arie Tanner brings energy, perspective and a team-first mindset to the Blackwell High School softball program, where the junior outfielder continues to grow both on and off the field.
Tanner, who plays in the outfield, said one of the biggest challenges of her position is “reading the ball sometimes,” a skill that demands focus, anticipation and quick decision-making. Despite the difficulty, she embraces the responsibility and uses each game as an opportunity to improve.
Her approach at the plate reflects a calm and intentional mindset. “My process at the plate is to make a quick prayer and take a deep breath before I get to the plate,” Tanner said. That routine helps her stay composed in high-pressure moments.
Tanner credits much of her motivation to her cousin, Nina Glass, whom she describes as her biggest inspiration. “The person I think inspires me the most is my cousin Nina Glass for her intelligence on the field, teamwork and her work ethic,” she said.
Team culture plays a central role in Tanner’s experience. She said the best unwritten rule in softball is “getting to cheer your teammates on,” emphasizing the importance of encouragement and positivity. “The thing I enjoy most about being on the team is the support and love that is given and taken from the players and coaches,” Tanner said. “They never talk down on each other and they keep everything on the field.”
That supportive atmosphere also brings personality to the team. Tanner pointed to Glass as “the most vocal and keeps everyone laughing,” while adding a lighthearted note that “the dirtiest uniform after a game would usually be Lexi Landwher.”
Off the field, Tanner enjoys baking and spending time with friends, balancing the demands of athletics with personal interests. In the classroom, she favors English and cites Ms. Katie as her favorite teacher.
Through athletics, Tanner has gained valuable life lessons that extend beyond competition. “Athletics has taught me to respect the people around me even if they don’t give any respect back,” she said.
As Tanner continues her high school career, her dedication, positive attitude and commitment to her teammates remain defining traits of her journey.
