A high school’s band or more than just students that play at halftime of a Friday night football game or in a local parade. They are a dedicated group of students that love music and put in a lot of hard work so they are prepared for these events, and most importantly, their competitions. Alonso Lopez is a member of the band at Blackwell High School and he says it takes a lot to excel.
“It has taken long hours of practice and dedication,” he said. “But most of all you have to really love the band in order to be successful.”
Lopez is a junior at Blackwell and he has been a member of the band since he was in the sixth grade.
While Alonso loves music, he says that his decision to join the band came after he saw his brother enjoying being a part of the band.
“I was mainly influenced by my older brother who was a member of the band and it caused me to gain interest,” he said. “I have made a lot of great memories in the band. But I think my highlight moment was probably going to San Antonio because I got to travel and play my instrument and meet new people who also enjoy the activity at the Alamo Bowl.”
There have been people throughout his life that have made an impact on Lopez. Not just as a member of the band, but also a person and a student.
“My biggest role models are probably my parents,” Alonso said. “Because without their support I probably wouldn’t stick with anything and they do everything they can to help me. I am thankful for my parents for supporting me throughout all these years in band and doing all they can for me to experience as much as I can. A teacher that has influenced me would be my band director Mr. Hudson because he’s taught me so much and allowed me to really enjoy the band and push me to try my hardest to be where I am today.”
As a member of the Blackwell band, Alonso says that representing his school and town is something that he is proud to do.
“It makes me feel proud to support my school in such a small community where everyone has to support each other.”
