Ponca City Teacher: Delwin Bartelt – Presented by First National Bank of Oklahoma

Delwin Bartelt is in his 24th year of being an educator. Over that time, he has had the opportunity to enjoy a lot of moments in the classroom.

“I enjoy many things about being a teacher,” he said. “Things such as the students, the unique viewpoints and youth they bring, every day is very different and not the same as many think it is as a teacher. I also enjoy it when students grasp concepts that can be tough or improve an area such as writing, test taking, etc.”

Bartelt teaches I Tech Geography, World History, Advanced placement Human Geography and Advanced placement World History at Ponca City High School. In addition he also coaches the Academic team.

Throughout his time as a student, there were teachers that had an impact on him and helped his decision to become a teacher himself.

“I had several teachers in high school in Wisconsin such as Mr. Cooper, who was my Political Science teacher who called me a rebel without a cause,” he said. “I also had several in college at Oklahoma State University as well, such as Dr. Patterson, Dr. Tait, and a graduate assistant Ms. Hoffman. I had people from Oklahoma and Wisconsin tell me I should think about a career as a teacher. In college I decided to act upon it after taking several Intro classes but not really wanting to do that as a career.”

Bartelt has been given different pieces of advice over the years, but he says that there are some of them that he still holds to.

“Some good advice I have been given is to be flexible and to not take it personally when a student acts out or has a problem in class. In addition, never hold grudges, move forward, not look back or dwell on a negative.”

When he is not in the classroom teaching, Delwin has other ways he enjoys spending his time.

“I like hanging with family and friends, traveling in the US and International, reading, OSU sports, Green Bay Packers, Colorado Avalanche and the Thunder for professional sports. I also enjoy playing occasional video games.”
